511 Words in a Great Big Hurry

May 19, 2009 By Jeff 76 Comments

viennasausagesThe timing couldn’t be worse, but I’ve been summoned to work early today.  I have to attend a meeting, upstairs in the Porketta Room, or whatever.  So, this is going to be an ultra-quickie.  Sorry, but the shit is out of my control…

Toney came home for lunch a few minutes ago, and I was ranting like a wino with a vienna sausage in his beard.  The site needs updates!  Real life is getting in my way!!  I’m starting to lose it, maaaaan!!!

And Toney just shook her head in exasperation, ate some kind of salad that looked alarmingly slimy, and went back to work.  I could almost see the words floating above her head:  I should’ve just eaten in the car….

Anyway, the Surf Report is available in the Kindle Store now.  Check it out.  I submitted it months ago, and heard nothing.  I figured they scanned the site with some sort of spider or robot, and didn’t care for the way we, you know, communicate.

But now I have a log-in to a control panel, where I can upload an image, write a description, etc.  This weekend I’ll spend some time on it, and make it a little better.

Not that I expect to make any money from it…  Amazon gets a 70% cut of all revenues, and a subscription is only $1.99.  So, it’s not going to lead to a vacation home, or anything.  I just think it’s kinda cool.  And sometimes that’s enough.

You must check out today’s Mockable.  Because he’s a nice guy, I guess, Metten gave me some credit for the “update,” but he did the whole thing.  And it blows my mind.  I’d have no idea how to go about such a thing, it’s all a great big blurry mystery to me.

Speaking of nice guys, check this out.  I went to high school with that dude, and he’s been playing in Tim McGraw’s band for many years.  Touring the world and making big bank…

A few years ago I bumped into him at a bar in Dunbar, and he couldn’t have been friendlier.  Some people become successful and morph into insufferable pricks, but not him.  I’ve never heard a negative word.  So, there ya go.

And I know he’s not “famous,” but he’s certainly successful.  When he was a kid he wanted to be a professional drummer, and look what he’s doing…

So, that leads to the Question of the Day:

Who is the most famous, or successful person from your high school?  We have our share of doctors and lawyers, but I’m looking for more unusual professions, like Tim McGraw’s longtime drummer.  That sort of thing.

Also, we’ll need a full report on their “insufferable prick quotient.”  Don’t forget to list their IPQ, on a scale of 1 to 10.  Very important!

Use the handy comments feature below.  And I need to snorkle-down a Salisbury steak frozen meal, and get my ass to the Porketta Room.

See ya tomorrow, boys and girls.

Now playing in the bunker.

There have been quite a few from my little hometown of Beckley WV and Woodrow Wilson High School. Some of the more famous are Chris Sarandon, Morgan Spurlock, Shuttle Commander John McBride and football Coach John Pruett. To the best of my knowledge, most are still down to earth West Virginians at heart.

Jeff was given a show contributor credit because I couldn’t get the freakin’ embed code to work, and pointed out my dumbass mistake. If it weren’t for Jeff, it never would have been posted to Mockable. Judging by the number of comments, that might have been a good thing…

There was a guy who graduated from my high school several years before me who became a successful dj on an adult-contemporary station. By most accounts he was a douchebag then, and I have recently had the opportunity to confirm that he is a douchebag now.

    Good Afternoon Surf Reporters……

a year ahead of me in high school were 2 baseball players that went on to the major leagues.
Doug Piatt, who pitched for the Montreal Expos, but that was short lived. I think he made it 2 years max, the majority of which was spent on minor league farm teams.

Second player was/is John Burkett, who played several years for the SF Giants, then on to the Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.
    Here’s his Wiki >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Burkett

Years after I graduated, a fellow alum went on to TV fame through Survivor and the Great Race. Her name is Amber Brkich >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Brkich

From two totally opposite sides of the universe, fellow alumni from my high school outside of Baltimore are:

Glenn Milstead, otherwise known as Divine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_(actor)) from John Water’s films. Especially famous for eating a real piece of dog shit in “Pink Flamingos”, and he was the original Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray” before John Travolta creeper-ed up the role.

and, Record Breaking Olympic Gold Medalist and Master Toker….Michael Phelps.

When my family lived in Upper Darby, PA, around the time I was born, our neighbor was Todd Ruddgren…singer, record producer. Although I never met him, my parents used to tell me that he use to sit on his front porch and play his guitar because his parents didn’t like “his music” being played in the house. Hmm…funny how things turn out.

i went to high school with a set of twins that were in Problem Child 2 as extras. They got barfed on in their scene on a ride at the carnival, which i found to be hysterical since they both had a pretty high insufferable prick quotient back then… one of them married an MLB player and he cheated on her. HAHA. bitch.

Can’t think of anyone obscure. Mr Miyagi (wax-on, wax-off) went to the other high school in my home town long before my time, but from my alma mater are:
Joe Carnahan (writer/director of Smokin’ Aces)
    Desmond Bishop (Packers linebacker)
    Quinton Ganther (Titans running back)

I heard that CC Sabathia lives here with his family, though he went to high school about 15 minutes away. Of course, I’ve never run into them anywhere around town, but they still do a lot of charity work here, so it is plausible they’re here in the off-season.

Sorry, I can’t attest to any IPQs for these folks. I know everyone just wants to hear about douchbaggery but I got nothin’.

I went to school with now musician and producer “Babyface”. He was a good friend when we were a struggling R&B band back in the 70’s but when he made it big, his douche factor went through the roof. He now touts and IPO factor of 10. I also attended college with the guys who later on became known as After Six. They are still some great guys to be around all though I’m glad they dropped the “IU Soul Revue – Lovemen” monicker. My uncle was one of the backup singers for Paul Young and the lead vocals for the defunct disco band called the Olympic Runners which later morphed into the London Beat. Finally, my nephew is the R/B for Virginia Tech who earned the MVP award during the Orange Bowl. Enough of the famous people stuff, I could go on about others but it would look like I’m taking over the Surf Report.

No one from my school was famous, but my husband went to school with Scott Hamilton, the ice skater. He was a sickly child and got picked on. Now he is an insufferable douche. Halle Berry’s Mom lives in our town and Father Guido Sarducci (SNL) came from Lorain Ohio. Jeffrey Daumer came from Bath Ohio, Marilyn Manson came from Canton as well as DEVO. We also have Mushroomhead, Michael Stanley , The Black Keys, Ani DeFranco,Joe Walsh, Drew Cary, and Chimaira. woo hoo. Trent Reznor (NIN) came from PA but made it big in Cleveland after he made it big in England. Pretty much a bunch of wackos. I was born near Toledo and they have Jamie Farr (Corp. Klinger) He made Tony Packo’s famous, and Danny Thomas a pretty swell guy when he was alive. He founded St. Judes which is an awesome hospital for cancer kids.

I went to school with 75% of the band Information Society. Kurt Larson, or Harland, or Valaquen or whatever retard name he’s using these days was a douchketeer without peer. He was in the habit of playing the theme to Sesame Street on a tape player when he felt that things just weren’t intelligent enough for him. He was regularly trounced by the hockey team. I also went to school with “Animal” from the pro wrestling tag team The Road Warriors. I don’t know what that says about New Brighton Minnesota. There’s a large government ammunition facility nearby, so maybe there is something in the ground water.

Our claim to fame would be Jeff Griggs:
    http://www.griggsgallery.com/index.html

He was on my speech/debate team in High School, and we did some theatre together. He was also the star of the First Baptist Church youth group in my town.

He got semi famous doing some soap opera work, was on “24” in season 4 (Brody) and he made the papers in 2001 when he painted a picture of Dubya that went on display at the White House. Of course, the White House was a bit embarrassed when it was discovered that Mr. Griggs got his start in Hollywood doing gay porn. I recall him being a terrific human being and a really talented actor.

The second most famous is now a professor of architechture or some crapola at an ivy league college. can you say ‘ist eine uberarseloch’? Oh Greta. I remember him when he was so wasted off his butt by the time last period writing class was rung I had to help him find the classroom door. now? never happened. what? me?
