Terrifying Rain and the New TV Season

September 30, 2010 By Jeff 111 Comments

The schools here closed before noon today, because of (get this)… a steady rain.  Our boys came in, immediately started calling their friends, and are now off celebrating their unexpected good fortune.  They can’t believe it, and neither can I.  It’s rain!  WTF?  Is this place turning in to California?

I’m fully expecting the school district to provide precipitation counselors tomorrow, to help students cope.  I mean, it can be a traumatic thing to watch pavement darken with moisture, and the woosh woosh woosh of windshield wipers is a terrifying sound that sometimes haunts youngsters well into adulthood.

Yeah, and that’s probably what some smartass in Johnstown blogged in May of 1889…  They had blogs back then, didn’t they?  Of course they did.

Since LOST is no more, we have no weekly TV shows to follow.  Friday Night Lights is the only other hour-long program we watch, and it’s on during bizarre months, so who the hell knows when it’ll show up again?

Therefore, we instructed the DVR to start recording a few semi-promising new shows, with the hope that one or two might click.  And it’s not starting out too well…

We watched the full lineup of our chosen shows last week, and none of them blew me away.  We’re prepared to give them one or two more weeks each, but I can already feel myself developing a bad attitude.  If something doesn’t start clicking soon, I’m going back to Buffy the Vampire Slayer through Netflix streaming.  Fukkit.

The best, by far, was Boardwalk Empire, on HBO.  But it was fairly slow-moving, and not exactly crackling with electricity.  I’ve heard that it improves, though.  And the first episode itself was far from bad, just not as good as I’d hoped.

I’ll probably be sticking with it for the season, because of all the talent involved.  I’m prepared to give them a little more leeway, because of their pedigree.

I’ve read lots of praise for the remake of Hawaii Five-O, but I didn’t like it much.  I might be jumping-ship on that turd after Week Two.  We’ll see how it goes.  The first episode was full of predictable action, but I didn’t care about any of the characters.  Maybe it’ll improve?  They have one more week to show me something.  I’m a very busy man.

Detroit 1-8-7 is a cop show featuring “Christopher” from the Sopranos.  The first one wasn’t bad, but also not very good.  I think they’re trying hard to be Homicide, but they still have a long way to go.  I might give it three weeks, instead of two, because the main character is kinda interesting.

We also watched some bizarre-ass sitcom, called Outsourced.  There were a few clever lines, but not nearly enough of ’em.  The setting is a call center in India, being run by an American, and it’s very strange.  I like strange, so I’m willing to offer this one a two or three week probation.  But comedies should also be funny, right?  I have a bad feeling.

I kinda wish we’d started watching The Event, but didn’t.  Is it any good?  There’s some hype surrounding it, at least.  Maybe I’ll get caught-up online, and jump in?  Is it worth the effort?

What new shows have you started watching this fall?  Are any of them worth a damn?  Tell us about it in the comments, won’t you?

In fact, what returning shows do you watch?  I’m not talking about reruns or DVDs, but weekly shows in current production.  We don’t have anything… nothing.  And dammit, we need a couple shows.

I’ll be back on Sunday, or Monday, or Saturday… Who knows?  Everything feels slightly askew around here.

Have a great day, my friends.

Now playing in the bunker

“Outsourced” is a piss poor remake of a half-assed Indie. I will not be watching again.

“Running Wilde,” however, shows promise. It’s got a lot of “Arrested Development” in it and that’s a good thing.

The “Outsourced” movie was good for a FEW laughs. They didn’t take it far enough – You could almost visualize the writers off-set trying not to piss off any Indians or hemp-wearing US and Canadian Americans. What a shame, it could have been SOOOO rudely entertaining…..

I’ve watched both episodes of “The Event”, and found it okay. The constant jumping-around-in-time aspect of it is very annoying though (“3 months earlier”, “yesterday”, “three years ago”, etc.). I’ll give it another coupla episodes or so before I give up.

Shows we TiVO and watch every week:

    Big Bang Theory
    30 Rock
    The Office
    Community
    Mad Men
    Bored to Death
    Boardwalk Empire

I’ve seen the first episodes of “Running Wilde”, “Raising Hope” and “Outsourced.” I’ll probably not watch “Outsourced” again, since I’m still not happy about “Parks and Recreation” being on hiatus because of it.

I missed Boardwalk Empire but would like to check it out. I saw a few “Hot in Clevelands” but it kinda blew. Then I saw the last episode of the season and laughed like a slow witted soul at the gummy bear factory.

Other than that, I really don’t watch any other shows. I’ll have to give Detroit 1-8-7 a shot since I used to work with Michael Imperioli’s aunt and I may run into her at the supermarket.

No other new shows here. I wanted to watch the comedy sitcom Mike and Molly (?) …I think thats the name. It follows Two and a Half Men. The guy’s from Pittsburgh. Anyone see it yet?

I watched the first episode of Mike and Molly. I thought it was awful. Just lame fat jokes. I mean I get it , that they are FAT but the whole thing was just about being fat. And it was just not THAT funny. I expected more of the Rosanne humor , her and Dan were fat and it came up , but it was not the WHOLE show. Maybe I didn’t give it enough time. But just couldn’t waste my DVR space.

I’m not enjoying much of the hour long “drama” crap. Law & Order LA was just sad. The CSI family is so hokey I get the urge to stand up and turn myself around.

Sometimes we’ll flip over to How It’s Made or one of those mechanical type shows and forget to go back to regular TV.

Every spinoff was just missing something before I realized it was him. They never had many scenes together, but Jerry Orbach & Sam Waterston in one show made for some great, great memories.

I spent roughly $700 on a Sony Bravia 40″ HDTV & then decided I didn’t want to get cable or dish set up. We decided we just don’t watch enough TV to warrant that extra bill, so we haven’t done it. And surprisingly, we are absolutely fine.
We have an HDMI cable linked from computer to the TV so we watch Hulu all the time (catching up on Anime shows lately, like the entire series of Full Metal Alchemist, GREAT SHOW!).
As for a current TV show that we watch, but just a little behind everyone (Hulu also airs new episodes for about a week after it airs) is Glee. We LOVE that show. My boyfriend isn’t into the pop music (at all) or the way they butcher classics like Queen, but he enjoys the story lines. I love it all. It’s a great show.
Other than that, I watch a lot of Intervention, Hoarders & The First 48 through Netflix. I like those shows.

It’s either discovery channel (which is even getting old for me) – For F sake’s they are trying to add drama into the lumber industry, or Sponge Bob – can’t say I sit down and watch it but its makes me chuckle when I catch his antics now and again.

I don’t watch TV. Period. We haven’t ever had cable or satellite in the 11 years we’ve been married.

Jeff, remember the flood of ’85? We got sent home from school early because of heavy rain, but then 6 feet of water filled downtown. Only time I ever remember getting out of school for rain.

I watch The Office, Mad Men, and a few cooking shows. I also like watching Pawn Stars and the hoarding shows.

I can’t stand Dog the Bounty Hunter or that other motherfucker who goes around exterminating pest. What’s with their weird ass hair and the way they dress? Freaks!

What parent would let that guy hold such a beautiful baby? Some parents are just so careless and negligent. So sad.

    Poor cow.

I watched the first episode of Terriers (at the neighbors) and it looked like a show I would like. It wasn’t however, good enough to get me to hook the cable back up. When I’m home and their isn’t a baseball game on the radio I’ll watch just about anything that doesn’t involve celebrities dancing or showing off sagging old man moobs.

    I miss Spongebob!

My weekend in case you care.
